Record monies raised
ASDA’s 2013 annual family fun day – On Your Marks – raised a record £46,200. The money will be presented to the Orchid charity, which was established in 1996 to fight male cancer. Orchid is one of ASDA’s nominated charities.
John Forde, one of the two ASDA employees who started the On Your Marks fun days at Bruntingthorpe 12 years ago, said he was staggered by the total. “Last year we raised £32,000 and thought that was a brilliant result. At this year’s event – on Saturday 10th August – people were even more generous. We are really proud of the record sum raised. But first we have to thank everyone at C Walton Ltd for their continued support and for their help in making On Your Marks the biggest and most successful Bruntingthorpe event of the year.”
Since the annual event for ASDA staff and their families began, almost £300,000 has been raised for various charities. This year, three local children’s cancer charities were invited to attend the day. Children with cancer, and their families, were given special ‘fast passes’ so they could enjoy themselves on all the attractions all day.
“There were several highlights during the day,” said Mr Forde. “But for many it was the appearance of The Stig from TV’s Top Gear programme who gave children from the cancer charities the drive of their life. And he stayed at Bruntingthorpe all day, much to the delight of the crowds.”
More than 15,000 people attended the event. “It really was a record day all round and we were again pleased to support an event that not only gives pleasure to many on the day, but also helps to fund research in the fight against cancer,” said Bruntingthorpe managing director, David Walton. “It might be that Orchid is an unfamiliar name to many. But the charity works tirelessly to fight male cancer. More than 43,000 men will be diagnosed with a male-specific cancer in 2013. From sons to grandfathers, all men face the risk…”This entry was posted in Latest. Bookmark the permalink.
